How Much THC Is in CBD Oil?

Share if you care

The amount of THC in hemp-derived CBD oil varies between different types of CBD extract, but never goes over the legal limit (0.3% by dry weight). Full spectrum CBD has the highest concentration of THC among the three types of CBD, resting right under the legal limit outlined by the 2018 Farm Bill. Broad spectrum CBD and CBD isolate, on the other hand, have gone through additional filtration methods to strip away detectable levels of THC, letting you enjoy the exclusive wellness-boosting benefits of CBD.

While that may surely answer your questions, it’s natural to have a few more pop up, like what’s the difference between hemp and marijuana; can you get high from CBD; and what CBDfx products have THC in them? In this article, we’ll tackle these questions and more, filling you in on how CBD and THC can coexist in your CBD products of choice.

CBD vs. THC

All types of cannabis plants produce over a hundred different cannabinoids, and they all bring various benefits to the table. The two main cannabinoids are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC); they exist at varying levels in all types of cannabis plants. CBD is popular for its wellness-boosting benefits, delivering unique effects for sleep, mood, and relaxation.**

THC, on the other hand, is the cannabinoid most responsible for cannabis’ notorious “high” effects. When you picture cannabis’ well-known psychoactive effects, THC is the main conductor.

What’s the Difference Between Hemp and Cannabis Marijuana?

If you were to look at the two different types of cannabis plants, hemp and marijuana, side-by-side, you’d probably have a hard time deciphering which is which. They both don the classic cannabis leaves, emit the plant’s iconic fragrance, and grow in the same sunny, temperate conditions. But on the molecular level, these plants are vastly different.

By its nature, hemp carries over a hundred different cannabinoids, with CBD being the most abundant. By law, federally legal hemp has to contain less than 0.3% THC by dry weight, which is right around the plant’s natural levels. Marijuana, conversely, has a much higher THC concentration, stretching to 30% in some in-door strains found in legal states like California or Colorado.

This is the main distinction between hemp and marijuana: THC concentration. And this distinction follows the plants through their maturation, cultivation, and extraction processes.

Can I Get High from CBD Oil?

CBD, by itself, is non-psychoactive, providing effects that mostly calm the mind and soothe the body—sans any shade of marijuana’s iconic euphoria. CBD simply delivers a full-body sense of relaxation that pairs well with a midday pause or a nightly unwind.** But, can CBD oil get you high?

This question can sometimes confuse customers because it depends on the type of CBD extract found in your CBD oil. Full spectrum CBD products, like our Mixed Berry Full Spectrum CBD Gummies, carry the legal limit of THC. While within the recommended dose, this limit can enhance your “chill” and provide stronger, more relaxing effects. If you take more than the recommended dose, these effects can intensify.

Broad spectrum CBD and CBD isolate, on the other hand, have trace levels of THC. So, even a larger dose of either extract has a long shot of delivering THC’s well-known effects.

If you’d like to see how much CBD and THC are in your chosen product, just check the product’s certificate of analysis. These are third-party lab results that can confirm the specific amount of THC and CBD in the product, as well as any additional, complementary ingredients.

Full Spectrum CBD Oil vs. Broad Spectrum CBD Oil vs. CBD Isolate Oil

Most commonly, you’ll see products with either full spectrum CBD oil, broad spectrum CBD oil, or CBD isolate oil. There are a few distinctions between these extracts, including their THC concentration.

Once harvested, hemp plants are ready for the extraction process. Full spectrum hemp oil contains all of the plant’s compounds or cannabinoids. Since it includes the full spectrum of cannabinoids, full spectrum CBD still contains trace amounts of THC. In this case, those trace amounts are less than 0.3% by dry weight. When paired together, CBD and THC work in concert with one another, bolstering each other’s effects on your mind and body.** This is known as the Entourage Effect, and it’s most prevalent in full spectrum CBD—the type of hemp-derived CBD with legal limits of THC.

Broad spectrum hemp oil goes through a similar extraction process as full spectrum oil but with an extra filtration step that ultimately whittles away all detectable THC traces from the oil. This is a useful option for those who want to avoid trace levels of THC altogether. While its THC levels have been diminished, broad spectrum CBD still carries all the other cannabinoids native to hemp plants, like CBG, CBC, and CBN. Plus, this type of extract sports the plant’s unique terpenes, flavonoids, and fatty acids, each giving the extract another layer of wellness-boosting benefits.**

And last, there’s CBD isolate, the purest form of CBD. After making broad spectrum CBD extract, we pass select batches through additional filtration steps to remove any extra cannabinoids or plant-based compounds, creating a CBD oil that is 99% CBD.
